Iroquois Middle School National Junior Honor Society
About NJHS: The Iroquois NJHS is founded on the principles of the National Organization's Pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. Membership to the Iroquois NJHS is limited to 8th grade students. Students are invited to apply for membership either at the end of 7th grade or the beginning of 8th grade. Students are first identified based on their cumulative GPA from 7th grade - a minimum of 3.5 - and given the opportunity to apply for membership.
Selection Process: Interested students who were invited to apply must fill out the application on their own and in their own handwriting. Completed applications must be turned in by the deadline as late submissions will not be accepted. Once the application has been reviewed, all staff (including office, lunch room, and custodial staff) are asked for input. The staff is directed to only recommend students who consistently exhibit excellent citizenship and character at all times. The students are expected to be positive, respectful, honest, mindful of expectations, and turn in work on time. New members are selected based on applications and staff recommendations.
Membership Commitment: The Iroquois NJHS members must maintain their high GPA, obtain a minimum of 20 service hours, and attend all meetings in order to remain in good standing. In addition, all members are expected to demonstrate the 5 Pillars of the National Junior Honor Society.
Service Hours: Each member is expected to obtain 20 volunteer hours, typically 5 per quarter, prior to the end-of-year deadline. They may help a neighbor, assist in church, help a teacher, volunteer at a food bank, or any other opportunity that allows them to serve the community and others. There may also be opportunities offered at school such as helping at sporting events, conferences, etc. A minimum of 5 hours per quarter are required. Hours must be submitted through the NJHS Schoology group page.
Officer Selection: A President, Vice President, Secretary, and Historian will be elected after our first meeting. Members who are interested will complete an application and prepare a speech to be given to the general membership.
Meetings are typically held on Thursdays approximately once per month at 7:15 am in the Media Center.
